Lovers II (Liebespaar II), plate 5 of 'Faces (Gesichter)', 1918, published in 1919.
Drypoint with blind stamp of the Marées-Gesellschaft, R. Piper & Co., Munich, at the lower right. Signed at the bottom right, inscribed 'Liebespaar (18)' on the bottom left. From the 1919 first edition of 100. 60 printed after steel-facing on laid-paper. This print is one of 40 printed before steel-facing on Japan paper. There is 1 known state proof and 3 known trial proofs.

Max Beckmann (1884 – 1950) was a German painter, engraver and designer belonging to the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit). His work reflects an approach of the world as a stage where human life is a play with people who are masked actors or acrobats. No one better that him showed the social and moral crisis of Germany in the 1920s or denounced the monstrosity of Nazism. And this is precisely because Beckmann, in refusing to engage directly, assigned himself a higher purpose, reaching a universal and timeless dimension in his paintings of historical events.
He rose to fame and was exhibited in numerous museums before World War 2, before being ranked amongst degenerate artists by the Nazis. Today he is considered one of the greatest German artists of the 20th century.
